Darrell Cornell Williams was sentenced to 5 years in prison, immediately after being convicted of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Battery, for an attack at a bus stop. The jury returned the guilty verdict around 7 p.m. Thursday evening, following a one-day trial in Lee County.
Assistant State Attorney Kathryn Lavelle and Assistant State Attorney Jonathan Howser prosecuted the case.
In August 2024, a man was standing at a bus stop, waiting for a bus, at the intersection of North Cleveland Avenue and Brown Road. He had earphones in and was watching videos on his phone. Another man, later identified as the defendant, walked up and began yelling at him.
The victim couldn’t hear what he was screaming and turned his back. He was then struck in the back of his head with a hard object. He turned and asked why the man did that and the defendant poked him in the forehead and pulled out a knife. The defendant walked away and was yelling threats.
The victim quickly left the scene and contacted law enforcement. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office was able to identify the defendant. He was later located and arrested.
