Murder Charge Filed in Cold Case

Today State Attorney Amira Fox announces that the State Attorney’s Office Cold Case Homicide Unit has filed a charge of Second Degree Murder against Joseph Carrozza, for the 2016 murder of a man in Fort Myers.

The State Attorney’s Office Cold Case Homicide Unit has been working on this case for over a year. Cold Case Homicide Unit Assistant State Attorneys Leena Marcos and Brenda Wade, along with Homicide Unit Investigators, have interviewed additional witnesses and worked with our law enforcement partners, analyzing evidence, such as new phone analysis done by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The Fort Myers Police Department has also been working alongside our Cold Case Homicide Unit to solve this crime.

The murder happened on October 6, 2016. The victim was found on the sidewalk at the Cypress Court Apartment Complex off Veronica Shoemaker Boulevard. He had been shot multiple times while on stairs leading up to his apartment. There were no witnesses to the actual shooting, but there were other witnesses with information that helped piece the crime together as the Cold Case Homicide Unit worked to put together the events of the day that would lead to identifying the person or persons responsible.

There is still an active investigation underway.

State Attorney Fox formed the Cold Case Homicide Unit in January 2019, just after being elected State Attorney. To date, the work of the unit has led to the identification, arrest, and charges filed against 25 defendants, in 21 murder cases.
