Zenaido Martinez-Gomez was sentenced to 15 years in prison, followed by 5 years of probation, for Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death. He was convicted in September following a jury trial in Lee County.
The defendant was also ordered to pay restitution for the funeral expenses of the victim and complete 120 hours of community service. His driver’s license was also revoked for 5 years.
Assistant State Attorney Mara Marzano, of the Traffic Homicide Unit, prosecuted the case.
The Florida Highway Patrol arrested the defendant in July 2023. The defendant had been driving his Jeep Gladiator in Lehigh Acres. He hit a man on a bicycle near the intersection of Douglas Lane and Ichabod Avenue and then hit a mailbox. Instead of stopping and rendering aid to the victim, the defendant fled the scene. The victim died from his injuries.
The defendant’s vehicle was located at his home in Lehigh, and he was arrested soon after.
