Murderer Resentenced to Life in Prison

Today the Honorable Circuit Court Judge Bruce Kyle resentenced Travis Fletcher to life in prison for the 2003 murder of a woman in Fort Myers.

The defendant shot the deaf and mute victim seven times, when he was trying to steal her car. He was 16 years old at the time of the murder, about three weeks away from turning 17. The State Attorney’s Office direct filed the case into adult court. He was convicted of Second Degree Murder with a Firearm or Deadly Weapon and Carjacking. He was sentenced to two concurrent life sentences.

In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court held that all children, 17 or younger, who were sentenced to life without parole, were entitled to a resentencing due to their age at the time of the crime.

Assistant State Attorney Sara Miller of the State Attorney’s Office Homicide Unit prosecuted the case.
