Jimmy Randall Roberts Jr., of Moore Haven, was sentenced to five life sentences in a vehicular homicide case. He was sentenced to life in prison for each count he was convicted of in March, following a jury trial in Lee County. He was sentenced on two counts of Vehicular Homicide, two counts of Reckless Driving with Serious Bodily Injury, and one count of Driving While License Suspended – Habitual Traffic Offender. He was facing between 22 years in prison and life on each count. The prosecutors asked for the maximum, life on each count.
Assistant State Attorney Mara Marzano of the State Attorney’s Office Homicide Unit and Assistant State Attorney Emma Thomas prosecuted the case.
The crash happened on May 25, 2024, in Lehigh Acres, just after 10:30 p.m. The defendant was driving an SUV with 5 passengers, and speeding on SR-82, driving 114 miles per hour, toward Sunshine Boulevard. He crashed into another car making a left off of SR-82 onto Sunshine. The driver of the car, a young woman, was killed. A passenger in the defendant’s SUV was also killed in the crash. The other passengers in the SUV, including the defendant, suffered critical injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol’s Traffic Homicide Unit did an extensive investigation leading to the arrest of the defendant for the crime.
“This case highlights why we have a Homicide Unit that has two specialized traffic homicide prosecutors. This defendant will now never again be on the roads putting innocent people at risk. The defendant’s behavior was egregious and avoidable and his actions that night ended the lives of two innocent people and caused critical injuries for the other victims,” said State Attorney Amira Fox.
