This morning in Charlotte County, Samantha Jean James was adjudicated guilty and sentenced, as a Habitual Felony Offender, for drug trafficking. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison for Trafficking Fentanyl 4 grams or more and ordered to pay a $50,000 fine and sentenced to 20 years in prison for Trafficking in Methamphetamine 28 grams or more and ordered to pay a $100,000 fine. The sentences are to run concurrently.
The defendant made a plea directly to the court. This is not a plea agreement. Defendants can plea straight to the court and give up their right to a jury trial.
Assistant State Attorney Caitlin Sorenson prosecuted the case.
Deputies, with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, arrested the defendant on March 24, 2025. The defendant had a warrant for her arrest in another drug case. As deputies approached her in a parking lot, she got in her Jeep and then backed into a pick-up truck and then drove forward into a tree.
She then fled on foot after the crash and was caught and detained. Trafficking amounts of Fentanyl and Methamphetamine were found in her vehicle and she was arrested.
She was previously sentenced to 15 years in prison in the case involving the warrant, for the sale or delivery of drugs.
