Conviction and Sentencing in Drug Case

Akmar Washington was adjudicated guilty and sentenced to 30 months in prison, after being convicted of Possession of a Controlled Substance. The jury returned the guilty verdict this afternoon, following a trial that began this morning, in Charlotte County.

Assistant State Attorney Scott Patterson prosecuted the case.

On July 25, 2022, the defendant was parked in a car at South County Park, in Punta Gorda, at about 2 a.m., when the park was closed. A Charlotte County Sheriff’s Deputy patrolling the park saw a car parked near a pond, with the engine running. Washington was in the passenger seat with a female in the driver’s seat.

Upon checking his identification, the deputy confirmed Washington had a warrant for his arrest for a violation of probation. He was searched, and in his back pocket, he had a wallet with a hidden compartment, that contained a baggie of methamphetamine. He was immediately taken into custody.
