Defendant Who Stole a Truck to Steal a Ferrari then Fled Law Enforcement – Convicted

David Alfonso was convicted of Fleeing to Elude Law Enforcement Officer at a High Speed or Wanton Disregard, Driving While License Suspended – Habitual Revocation, Burglary of a Conveyance, Resisting/Obstructing Officer without Violence, and two counts of Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle.

This case involves a pursuit that led from Collier County to Lee County, after the defendant drove a stolen pick-up truck to a restaurant in an attempt to steal a Ferrari.

Assistant State Attorneys Jonathan Howser and JoAnn Biddle prosecuted the case. The jury returned the guilty verdict this afternoon, following a two-day trial in Lee County.

On October 19, 2024, the defendant stole a pick-up truck and drove it to a Bonita Springs restaurant, to try to steal a Ferrari that was in the parking lot. He was caught in the act by a citizen and fled the scene in the stolen Ford F-250. A Collier County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted the truck near Bonita Beach Road and followed the defendant as he drove onto I-75, near Corkscrew Road. The defendant was driving at a high rate of speed and erratically. He would not stop the truck and then got off I-75.

The Florida Highway Patrol then picked up the pursuit. They were able to stop the truck near Alico Road by doing a PIT maneuver. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office also was on scene. The maneuver forced Alfonso to stop the vehicle, but he jumped out and ran. He was found hiding in a drainage canal.

Sentencing is scheduled for December 1, 2025.

The defendant also has another case pending involving a Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle charge in a crime that happened days prior to this one.
