Guilty Verdict in Drug Case

Robert James Mathias, 44, of Moore Haven, was found guilty as charged of Resisting/Obstruction of an Officer without Violence, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of
Paraphernalia. The jury returned the guilty verdict following a one-day trial in Glades County.

In 2019, deputies with the Glades County Sheriff’s Office, found Mathias asleep in a van by the river, at the Alvin Ward Boat Ramp. He had his turn signal on and was parked. Deputies looked inside and saw a marijuana pipe in the center console and what appeared to be a baggie of methamphetamine in a shoe next to the defendant. Deputies had Mathias step out of the van and placed the shoe with the drugs on top of the vehicle. The defendant then grabbed the shoe and threw it towards the river. Deputies retrieved the items which did test positive for meth.

Sentencing is scheduled for October 5th. Assistant State Attorney Will Dorman prosecuted the case.
