Life in Prison for Murder

Luis Enrique Ortega, was adjudicated guilty and sentenced to life in prison, after being convicted of Second Degree Murder. He was also sentenced to 5 years in prison for Aggravated Assault with a Firearm. He was sentenced immediately after the jury returned a guilty verdict, following a two-day trial in Lee County.

Assistant State Attorney Sara Miller, of the State Attorney’s Office Homicide Unit, and Assistant State Attorney Connor Boe, prosecuted the case.

In September 2019, Ortega got into an argument with a neighbor, and shot him, while at his Fort Myers home. The defendant then went back to his own house and barricaded himself inside.

The victim, who was still alive when Fort Myers Police Officers and emergency responders arrived, was rushed to the hospital but later died.

The Fort Myers Police Department SWAT Team got the defendant out of his home and took him into custody.
