Maximum Sentence in Courtroom Violence Case

Today George Washington Whitfield Jr., was convicted of Resisting an Officer with Violence and immediately sentenced to the maximum of 5 years in prison for a confrontation with court deputies.

In May, the defendant appeared in court, with handcuffs on his wrists, to be sentenced for an earlier conviction of Domestic Violence – Strangulation. During the sentencing, he told the court, “You want to see crazy, I’ll show you crazy.” He then started acting erratic and calling the judge names.

The defendant then stood up and started walking away from where he was supposed to be standing. Deputies intervened to stop him, but he resisted and began to fight with deputies on the ground, kicking them, and had to be tazed in court. He was restrained and as he was being fingerprinted, he began to resist again.

Today’s sentence will follow the 48-month sentence he received in the domestic violence case.

Assistant State Attorneys Jacob Wetter and Melanie Sanders prosecuted the cases.
