Murder Conviction

Rey Enrique Olivo has been found guilty as charged of Second Degree Murder. The jury returned the guilty verdict this afternoon following a three-day trial in Lee County.

Assistant State Attorneys Michael Curley and Ryan Pomponio prosecuted the case.

On April 8, 2023, the Cape Coral Police Department responded to a call for service at Cape Coral Hospital. A man who had a significant head injury and was unresponsive, was dropped off at the emergency room by an unknown person, driving a Chevy Suburban SUV. The victim later died from his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was identified and located in North Fort Myers. He gave a statement to police and the case was turned over to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to investigate further since the crime happened in their jurisdiction.

Witnesses told authorities there was an altercation that occurred between the victim and a man named “Rey,” who was later identified as the defendant. They said Rey punched the victim in the face knocking him out. After he fell to the ground, they said he stomped on the victim’s head, more than a dozen times, until they were able to force him to stop the attack.

Detectives were able to locate the defendant and arrest him.

Sentencing is scheduled for June 24, 2024.
