Prison Sentence in Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer Case

Alfonzo Lee Churchwell was adjudicated guilty and sentenced to 10 years in prison, followed by 5 years of probation, for Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. The defendant pled to charges in two cases, as jury selection for his trial was about to get underway.

Assistant State Attorneys Olivia Ferrell and Melanie Sanders prosecuted the cases.

The first crime happened in April 2021, when a Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted a traffic stop on a Ford Mustang on Leonard Boulevard in Lehigh Acres due to dark tint. Instead of stopping, the car accelerated at a high rate of speed and then was abandoned in a driveway. The vehicle’s tag showed the car was registered to the defendant. Surveillance video from a residence showed the defendant, a convicted felon, exiting a vehicle with a firearm. The firearm was later recovered by deputies.

Weeks later in May, a car the defendant was driving was stopped on U.S. 41 in South Fort Myers by a Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy. The defendant pulled over but kept the car running. As the deputy approached, the defendant turned the wheel and accelerated towards the deputy. He then fled the scene and was later apprehended.
