Gregory Lamar Caldwell, 40, of Cape Coral was convicted by a Lee County jury of Fleeing to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer with Lights and Sirens and Driving with License Suspended or Revoked following a one day trial.
In November 2017 Fort Myers Police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Caldwell after he failed to use a blinker and cut off two different people causing them to hit their brakes to avoid hitting him on Colonial Boulevard. As officers activated their lights and sirens, Caldwell made a u-turn and sped away from them. He continued to flee from the officers and began swerving into lanes of oncoming traffic until he lost control of the vehicle and hit a curb on Evans Avenue just north of Winkler Avenue. He then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. He was captured by officers after a short foot chase. He had been driving on a suspended license.
Caldwell’s sentencing is scheduled for May 29th. He faces up to 5 years in prison. Assistant State Attorney Alyssa Wolf prosecuted the case.
