Defendant Sentenced to Prison for Security Fraud

Kevin Therrell, 47, of Boca Raton, was sentenced to 75 months in prison, followed by 10 years of probation, for Organized Fraud Over $50,000 and seven counts of Securities Fraud. He was also ordered to pay $53,500 in restitution to the victim.

The defendant tricked a now 84-year-old victim, into investing over $50,000 in fraudulent securities by providing fraudulent stock certificates and statements for a railway freight car manufacturing company. The defendant used the victim’s money to fund his personal lifestyle.

The defendant made a plea to the court, giving up their right to a jury trial, with a plea straight to the court for sentencing. This is not a plea agreement.

Economic Crimes Unit Assistant State Attorney Michael Curley and Economic Crimes Unit Chief Assistant State Attorney J.D. Miller prosecuted the case.

The case was investigated by the Florida Office of Financial Regulation and then turned over to the State Attorney’s Office Economic Crimes Unit for prosecution. The defendant was arrested in 2024.
