Guilty of Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer

Travis Clayton Rains was found guilty as charged of three counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting an Officer without Violence,
Battery on a Law Enforcement Canine, Burglary, Discharging a Firearm from a Vehicle, and Shooting at, within, or into an Occupied Vehicle. The jury returned the guilty verdict this evening, following a four-day trial in Lee County.

On September 15, 2020, a home was burglarized in the San Carlos Park area. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded and the suspects tried to evade deputies, fleeing in a van. A shoot-out then occurred at the intersection of Three Oaks Parkway and Alico Road. The defendant was the passenger in the van, shooting at pursuing law enforcement.

Assistant State Attorney Tyler Lovejoy, Lee County Circuit Court Chief, and Assistant State Attorney Steven Vitale prosecuted the case. Sentencing is scheduled for April 4, 2023.
