Raymond Colon, 55, of Naples, was found guilty as charged of First-Degree Murder. The jury returned the guilty verdict last night, after deliberating for about 30 minutes,
following a nine-day trial in Collier County.
Colon was indicted on one count of First-Degree Murder by a Collier County Grand Jury on March 26, 2019. State Attorney Amira Fox convened the Grand Jury to hear the case. In Florida, the charge of First-Degree Murder can only be brought forth by a Grand Jury Indictment.
The crime happened on December 9, 2018, when a 911 call was received from a woman who said “he has a gun, he has a gun, he’s going to kill me…. he just shot me.” An Additional 911 call came in about a man, later identified as the defendant, walking down a driveway, holding a gun, who then got into a white SUV.
Deputies with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office responded in minutes. As the first deputy arrived, a white SUV pulled up behind the patrol car, in front of the Naples residence. A neighbor yelled out to the deputy that the driver was the man who they had seen fleeing the home. Colon was immediately taken into custody.
The victim was found on the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead.
Collier County Circuit Court Chief Assistant State Attorney Deborah Cunningham and Chief of Narcotics Assistant State Attorney Kate Rumley prosecuted the case. Sentencing has been set for May 10th.
