Andrew Bertyl Carter, 48, of Fort Myers, was found guilty as charged of Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Personal Injury. The jury returned the guilty verdict just after
7 p.m. last night following a one-day trial in Lee County.
On February 25, 2021, two sisters were walking along Canal Street in Fort Myers. The defendant was driving a Kia and was coming towards them. After driving past, he put the car in reverse and hit one of the women. He stopped briefly and asked them not to call the police and then fled the scene. The woman survived the incident.
The Fort Myers Police Department arrived on scene and were able to identify and locate the driver, leading to the defendant’s arrest that same day.
Assistant State Attorney SueGweneth Venord prosecuted the case. Sentencing is scheduled for August 29, 2022.
