Antonio Vega, 26, of Fort Myers, was found guilty as charged with Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, and Shooting At, Within or Into an Occupied Vehicle. A jury returned the guilty verdict Thursday evening, following a three-day trial in Lee County.
In March 2019, Vega was involved in a shooting incident in Fort Myers. He was the passenger in a car that started following the victim’s car, just after 11 a.m. He pulled up next to the victim’s car on Fowler Street, opened the door, and fired one shot into the driver’s side of the car. The driver, a woman, was shot in her lower torso and survived the shooting.
The car the defendant committed the crime in, was later found abandoned at a nearby apartment complex. The car was processed and DNA was found on the interior passenger side door handle, linked to the defendant.
The Fort Myers Police Department led the investigation into the crime and located Vega. The U.S. Marshals Task Force assisted in the arrest.
Assistant State Attorney Leena Marcos prosecuted the case. Sentencing is scheduled for May 2nd.
