Israel Brian Mejia was convicted of Manslaughter, following a four-day trial in Lee County.
Assistant State Attorney Brenda Wade, of the State Attorney’s Office Homicide Unit, and Assistant State Attorney Erin Hughes, of the State Attorney’s Office Special Victims Unit, prosecuted the case.
In June 2021, the defendant and a co-defendant, were arrested following a shooting at a Fort Myers apartment complex. One person was shot and killed; the victim was found in the parking lot.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office investigated the crime. Nearby residents reported hearing loud arguing and then gunshots, from the apartment off Brantley Road. The defendants fled the scene following the shooting and were apprehended shortly after the crime.
Co-defendant Anna Rose Cisneros was sentenced earlier this year for Accessory After the Fact in this case, for providing false information about the defendant.
