Justin D’Angelo Copland, 23, of Lehigh Acres, has been found guilty as charged of Second Degree Murder with a Firearm. The jury returned the guilty verdict Friday,
following a four-day trial in Lee County.
Assistant State Attorney Brenda Wade, of the State Attorney’s Office Homicide Unit, and Assistant State Attorney Leena Marcos prosecuted the case.
On May 19, 2022, Copland shot a woman at a home in Lehigh Acres, four times in the head, killing her. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and found the victim on the floor inside the home, with obvious gunshot wounds to the face and head. Two adults and two juveniles who were in the home at the time of the shooting were unharmed.
The investigation revealed that the victim was meeting with the subject known only as “Justin” outside in front of her home. While the victim was outside, the defendant fired multiple shots and then drove away from the scene.
Several hours later, after discarding the firearm, showering, and changing his clothes, Copland showed up to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office substation and advised that he just shot someone.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 11, 2024.
