This morning, Rey Enrique Olivo, was sentenced to life in prison for Second Degree Murder. He was convicted in May following a trial in Lee County.
Assistant State Attorneys Michael Curley and Ryan Pomponio prosecuted the case.
The investigation started on April 8, 2023, with the Cape Coral Police Department, after they responded to a call for service at Cape Coral Hospital. Someone had dropped off a man, unresponsive with a significant head injury, at the emergency room. All that was known was the person was driving a Chevy Suburban SUV. The victim later died from his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle was identified and located in North Fort Myers. The case was then turned over to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to investigate further since the crime happened in their jurisdiction.
The investigation determined there had been an altercation between the victim and the defendant earlier that day. The defendant punched the victim in the face knocking him out, then stomped on his head after he fell to the ground. Witnesses to the attack said he did that more than a dozen times until they were able to force him to stop.
