Today State Attorney Amira Fox announces that the State Attorney’s Office has filed a Notice of
Intent to Seek the Death Penalty against defendant Nicholas Stephen Canfield.
The 25-year-old was indicted by the Lee County Grand Jury in October for First Degree Murder,
Sexual Battery on a Child Less than 12 Years of Age, and three counts of Aggravated Child
Abuse.
The indictment charges that Canfield murdered a child on or about April 29, 2020 in Lee County.
The indictment charges the additional crimes happened on one or more occasions between
March 1, 2020 and April 29, 2020, also in Lee County. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office handled
the investigation.
Assistant State Attorney Francine Donnorummo, Special Victims Unit Chief, and Assistant State
Attorney Natalie Savino will be prosecuting the case.
