Prison Inmate Sentenced for Attack in Prison

Rene Perales, of Jacksonville Beach, has been adjudicated guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison for Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon. The defendant was also sentenced to 15 years in prison to be served concurrent to the first count, for Possessing Contraband in a Correctional Facility. He was sentenced as a prison releasee reoffender. This case involved an incident that occurred at the Charlotte Correctional Institution (CCI).

Assistant State Attorney Kristan Burns prosecuted the case.

On August 11, 2020, the defendant, an inmate at CCI, tried to attack another inmate with a sharpedged weapon, he had hidden on his body. A correctional officer who had been escorting the defendant and other inmates to the recreation yard at the time, intervened and was struck in the hand with the weapon, as they successfully stopped the attempt to stab another inmate. The officer was injured and treated at a local hospital.

The Florida Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General investigated the crime.
