Derrick Lamar Williams, of North Naples, was sentenced to 86.85 months in prison for Possession of a Controlled Substance. The sentence is above the statutory maximum due to the defendant’s criminal history on his scoresheet. He was convicted in January following a trial in Collier County. Assistant State Attorneys Deanna Berman and Sarah Woodward prosecuted the case.
The crime happened on September 27, 2020. A Naples Police Officer saw the defendant riding a bicycle at night, with no light, along 5th Avenue North. The officer asked the defendant to stop but the defendant said he was going to the store and continued pedaling about another half a block before stopping.
As the officer approached, the defendant threw a baggie to the ground. The officer retrieved the baggie, saw that it was drugs and arrested the defendant. The contents later tested positive for Eutylone, which is a synthetic cathinone similar to MDMA.
