Sentence for Sexual Activity with a Child

Suzanne Owen, 36, of North Fort Myers, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison
followed by ten years of sex offender probation after pleading guilty to one count of Sexual
Activity with a Child. She is also now a registered lifetime Sexual Predator.

In April 2018 the Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a report that the defendant, a teacher, had
an inappropriate relationship with one of her students. After further investigation it was found
that Owen and the victim communicated through e-mails and text messages. The defendant also
admitted to engaging in sexual activity with the student.

Owen had made an open plea to the court. Each defendant has a right to plea straight to the court
for sentencing and forgo a jury trial. She withdrew her open plea and a plea agreement was
reached. The State Attorney’s Office worked with the victim’s family for an agreed upon
resolution.

Owen has no previous criminal history. As part of her sentence she must; undergo a sex offender
treatment program, wear a GPS tracking monitor device during probation, have a curfew, and
can have no contact with anyone under the age of 18.

Assistant State Attorney Mary Anderson handled the case.
