Today in Charlotte County, John De Angelis was adjudicated guilty and sentenced to 20 years in prison, followed by 10 years of probation, for 10 counts of Possession of Child Pornography. He is also now a registered sex offender. In a second case, he was sentenced to 210.675 months in prison for one count of Installation or Use of Tracking Devices and one count of Stalking. The sentences are to run concurrently.
The defendant did an open plea to the court in both cases. This is not a plea agreement. Defendants have the right to plea straight to the court for sentencing and give up their right to a jury trial.
Assistant State Attorney Tracy Detzel prosecuted the cases.
The child pornography case started in 2024 with a cyber tip submitted to law enforcement from Microsoft Bing about possible child sexual abuse material on an electronic device. A detective with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, who is also on the FBI Task Force, began an investigation. The tip provided information about the location of the residence, and a search warrant was done at the defendant’s home.
Multiple electronic devices were seized, and child sexual abuse material was found on the defendant’s X-Box video game system. There was also child sexual abuse material found on the defendant’s phone, with 153 images saved, as well as in his internet browser history on his phone.
In the second case, in 2025, the defendant was stalking a woman and put an air tag on her vehicle to track her location. He would then show up where she was.
