DUI Manslaughter

Golden Gate Estates resident Rene Miles, 42, has been found guilty by a Collier County jury for a crash that killed a local father of four. Miles was found guilty of DUI Manslaughter, DUI Serious Bodily Injury, and two counts of DUI with Injury to Person. He faces up to 22 years of incarceration when he is sentenced on August 14th.

Miles caused a three car crash on December 12, 2015 on Golden Gate Boulevard near 27th Street Southwest. James “Cecil” Riner, II was killed. Riner’s wife, as well as two others, were injured. Miles admitted drinking at a local restaurant prior to the crash. After the crash he did not call 911 or render aid, instead he stopped about a mile away. He did not immediately tell law enforcement on scene that he was involved, but said he saw the crash happen.

Miles performed poorly during field sobriety exercises and refused a blood test. His blood alcohol level was still over the legal limit when it was tested 6 ½ hours after the crash after a warrant was obtained.

Assistant State Attorney Mara Marzano of our Homicide Unit and Assistant State Attorney Nicole Mirra prosecuted the case. “I hope this case reminds people that drinking and driving is never the right thing to do. There are always other options. Driving drunk can easily lead to someone’s death,” said ASA Marzano.
