Economic Crime

A bank teller who stole over $200,000 from an elderly couple was sentenced today. Altagracia Ortuno, of Lehigh Acres, pled no contest to charges of Grand Theft over $100,000 and Criminal Use of Personal Identification Information ($50,000 or more). She was sentenced to 6 years in prison, followed by 20 years of probation. She must also pay $209,000 in restitution.

Over the course of a year, Ortuno withdrew and stole the money while working at a bank in Bonita Springs, even forging the name of one of the victims on the withdrawal slips. This continued until one victim realized a withdrawal took place while the couple was out of town for their daughter’s wedding.

Ortuno, 33, used money for various purchases including plastic surgery, football tickets, a pick-up truck, and thousands of dollars on music from iTunes.

Assistant State Attorney Jennifer Royal of our Economic Crimes Unit handled the case.
