Mario Lopez

Honorable Lee County Circuit Court Judge Joseph C. Fuller has ordered the continued involuntary commitment to the Department of Children and Families of Mario A. Lopez. The court held an evidentiary hearing on May 19th, 2015.

In 2002, Lopez stabbed his friend more than 100 times at the victim’s home in Cape Coral. Following his arrest, there were three hung juries in this case. Ultimately he was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Since then Lopez has been held in the state hospital system.

In December of 2014, the state hospital recommended he be conditionally released as he no longer met the conditions for involuntary commitment. Based on that, the State Attorney’s Office pursuant to the rule of procedure, filed a request for a hearing. Assistant State Attorneys Anthony Kunasek and Carrie Gill have handled this case from the beginning.
